30 Behavioral Interview Questions (With Example Answers)

What are behavioral interview questions?

Behavioral interview questions ask you to describe how you've handled specific situations in the past, based on the theory that past behavior predicts future behavior. They typically start with "Tell me about a time when..." or "Give me an example of..."

The STAR method

Structure every behavioral answer using STAR:

  • Situation: Set the scene briefly (1-2 sentences)
  • Task: What was your responsibility? (1-2 sentences)
  • Action: What did YOU specifically do? (3-4 sentences, this is the bulk)
  • Result: What was the measurable outcome? (1-2 sentences)

Each answer should take 90-120 seconds. Practice out loud — reading is not the same as speaking.

Preparing your answer bank

You don't need a different story for every question. Prepare 6-8 strong stories from your experience — each covering a different challenge or skill — and adapt them to fit different questions. Good stories are versatile.

What makes an answer stand out

The best behavioral answers are specific (real numbers, real names, real context), focused on YOUR actions (not "we"), and end with a concrete result. Vague, generic answers signal weak self-awareness. Specific, structured answers signal executive presence.
